Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive at Ben Gurion International Airport and transfer to The City of Jerusalem where we check into our The Jerusalem Dan Panorama Hotel.

19.00 We enjoy a welcome cocktail in the lounge and will be joined by Haim Spiegel Director of Food and Beverage for the Dan Corporation and an old friend of Sidney.

19.00 We meet for Shabbat Dinner

Shabbat traditionally includes three meals: Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, and the third meal in late afternoon. For non-Orthodox Jews, Friday night dinner is the most popular Shabbat meal. Typical Shabbat foods include challah (braided bread) and wine, which are both blessed before the meal begins.

Day 2

08.00 Breakfast, the Israeli way, get used to it!

In Israel’s early days, pioneers on kibbutzim would rise at 4am to work the fields and milk the cows and return for a hearty breakfast at 8 or 9am. Breakfast would revolve largely around their own produce: eggs, bread, dairy products, fresh vegetables and fruit.

Fast forward five or six decades and the pioneers’ breakfasts have evolved into one of the most delicious – and renowned – gastronomic experiences in Israel. Every hotel serves a version of the “Israeli Breakfast” – invariably a giant buffet of vegetables, salads, cheese, eggs, smoked fish, breads, pastries, yoghurts, cereals and fruit.

After breakfast we go on a Middle Eastern Market Adventure through Mehane Yehuda Market

Nachlaot, one of Jerusalem’s most interesting areas, is known for its narrow, winding lanes, old-style housing, hidden courtyards and many small synagogues. It is a cluster of over 20 courtyard neighbourhoods bustling with spice stalls and markets. Your first stop is Machane Yehuda Market, where you will take in all the rich fragrances, bright colours and exotic sounds this iconic Jerusalem market has to offer. Let the tastings begin!

This afternoon we visit The Mount of Olives, one of three hills on a long ridge to the east of Jerusalem and the location of many biblical events. Rising to more than 800 metres, it offers an unrivalled view of the Old City and its environs.

19.00 Tonight, Alison and Sidney take you out for Dinner in The Old City in The Jewish Quarter.

Day 3

07.00 Israeli Breakfast. We have an early start today.

We meet our guide Beni at 8am at Jaffa Gate who will take us on a walking Tour through the Old City visiting historic and religious sites.

Enter the Temple mount` have a coffee break, walk the Via Dolorosa – leave the old city through the “Lions gate”, visit Gethsemane. Go down the Kidron Valley to see the monumental tombs, walk up to the wailing wall through the “dung gate”

Lunch in a traditional Israeli street café.

Visit the Christ church and walk to the Holy Sepulchre. Visit the Ethiopian Monastery, walk to the “Damascus gate”, enter king Solomon’s quarries. Walk to the Garden tomb and from there we will walk back to the Hotel

For Temple Mount, laptops and tablets are forbidden. All crosses etc. must be hidden. The rules are strict since this is currently the most sensitive religious place in the world.
It is worth it

20.00 Tonight you have the evening free to relax, explore and enjoy in The Holy City
Dinner is for your own account. If you need advice or need us to make you a booking, please do ask.

Day 4

08.00 Israeli Breakfast

09.30 Your day tour begins with a descent into the Judean desert, a barren wilderness in the heart of the Holy Land. En-route, you will pass the Inn of the Good Samaritan, before ascending by cable car to reach the mountaintop site of Masada. The cliff’s remoteness and difficult approach made it a perfect fortress, and it was here that King Herod built two fortified palaces over 2,000 years ago.

13.00 After exploring the archeological ruins of Masada you can enjoy a light lunch. Lunch is for your own account.
We continue to the Dead Sea past the Ein Gedi oasis and the ancient settlement of Qumran. From a distance you can see the caves where approximately 900 parchment documents of religious significance were discovered – the fabled Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Dead Sea is the next stop, where you’ll have approximately two hours to relax on the mineral beach and enjoy the surreal experience of floating in the salt-rich water, 400m (1,312 ft) below sea level! Don’t miss the chance to have a mud bath in the world’s richest source of natural salts.

We drive back to Jerusalem along the Old Roman road which links Jerusalem and Jericho and see Jericho from the distance.

Tonight Sidney and Alison take you to one of The World’s most iconic hotels for dinner.

Day 5

07:00 Our Guide picks us up for our two night/ three-day adventure to Jordan.

Leaving Jerusalem in the morning we drive to Jordan, crossing over at the Allenby border crossing. Passing by incredible views of Jordan, we arrive at the town of Madaba and discover the amazing Byzantine mosaics excavated in different locations throughout the town and visit a Jordanian bakery specialising in middle eastern desserts.

We visit Mount Nebo mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land.
We’ll have lunch in a local restaurant and try out some sweet kanafeh for dessert.

After lunch we make our way to Petra where we check in for the night at our hotel.

20.00 Dinner

Day 6

07.00 Breakfast

Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world, and poetically described as “a rose-red city half the age of time”, is an incredible experience for any traveller. Carved into the red rocks of the desert cliffs thousands of years ago by the ancient Nabatean people, Petra was hidden under sand for centuries before recently becoming accessible again.

We will tour through the Visitor Centre, Siq, Treasury and Amphitheatre with our guide who will explain the sites and history along the way.

After enjoying lunch there will be free time to continue individually according to your interest and stamina: climb to the Royal Tombs; walk the Roman Cardo; hike up to the Monastery and explore the various other sites.

Leaving Petra, we take a scenic drive to our Bedouin camp for an overnight stay in the heart of Wadi Rum’s majestic desert.

“Vast, echoing and God-like.” That is how T.E. Lawrence, the British archaeologist and army officer who inspired the 1962 film “Lawrence of Arabia,” described Wadi Rum.

As you approach the wind-swept mountains that fiercely jut out of the burnt orange sand in Jordan’s largest desert, it’s easy to see what he meant. The landscape here is like something from another world.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that a hotel in Wadi Rum has just opened a dramatic Martian Experience in the heart of this wilderness, which lets visitors feel as though they have landed on the Red Planet.

It was Ridley Scott’s Oscar-nominated 2015 film “The Martian” that provided the inspiration for the 20 futuristic domes that are today eerily planted in the desert at Sun City Camp.

“We thought instead of going to Mars, you can come see it here in Wadi Rum.”

We enjoy a Buffet Dinner in the desert.

Day 7

After Breakfast we enjoy a Jeep Tour in the desert where we will visit the most scenic and famous sites including Lawrence’s Spring, rock arches, sand dunes, Nabatean sites and Khazali Canyon where you can visit ancient Nabatean inscriptions which are about 2000 years old.

After Lunch we drive back to the border crossing at Allenby and take a drive to the vibrant city of Tel Aviv where Sidney worked for several years as Executive Chef for the Dan Hotel Group.

We check into our Dan Hotel overlooking the Mediterranean and splendid beaches edged by the city’s famous seafront promenade.
Dinner is for your own account tonight

Day 8

08.00 Israeli Breakfast.

09.00 We set off to The Carmel Market, Tel Aviv’s largest food and vegetable market.

We visit this charming market where vendors sell fresh food, try some local specialties and enjoy Tel Aviv’s bustling culinary culture. Just off Hacarmel Market, you will find this sweet little neighbourhood with its narrow alleys and small houses. Established in 1903 by immigrants it is known as the Yemenite Vineyard.

12.00 We enjoy a street culinary adventure at the Market

14.00 We will experience an afternoon of cooking at ‘The Dan Gourmet Cooking School’ with Sidney’s old friend Avi who is Director of Culinary Arts and who was one of Sidney’s Chefs.
In the class you will prepare a variety of classic local dishes such as Mesahan (chicken with sumac on a Middle Eastern style bread), Pita Bread, Tahini, Tomato and Pomegranate Salad, a Jaffa style kebab, Tubule Salad (bulgur and parsley) and Mahalibi.

18:30 We enjoy the dishes we cooked this afternoon for an early Dinner

After Dinner you can stroll to the Old Port City of Jaffa along the beachfront and the Jaffa Boardwalk.

Yafo (Jaffa Hill) rises to a height of 40 meters and offers a commanding view of the coastline; hence its strategic importance in military history. The accumulation of debris and landfill over the centuries made the hill even higher. Archaeological evidence shows that Jaffa was inhabited some 7,500 years BCE. Jaffa’s natural harbour has been in use since the Bronze Age.

Day 9

08.30 Israeli Breakfast

We return this morning to ‘The Dan Gourmet Cooking School’ for our second Culinary Adventure with Avi.

Jewish cuisine is rich and diverse.

This morning will expose you to classic and traditional Jewish dishes and foods that have become Jewish tradition over the years

In the class you will prepare a variety of dishes such as such as Fish in pistachio crust, Hummus, Falafel, green and red, Fatush Salad, Open Fire Eggplant and Knafe

13.30 We enjoy our dishes for lunch at The School

This afternoon you have free to explore and stroll through Tel Aviv.

Tel Aviv has one foot in the Middle East and the other dangling in the inviting waters of the Med. It affords visitors a unique mix of both. Israel’s commercial, cultural and culinary capital is hot, noisy and hedonistic – yet simultaneously self-confident and cultured.

19.30 We meet to enjoy dinner in one of Sidney’s favourite dinner experiences in The Yemenite Quarter.

Day 10

07.30 Israeli Breakfast

09.00 We Depart for Haifa.

On route we stop and Visit ancient Caesarea with its Roman amphitheatre, port, hippodrome, and aqueduct. This is a magnificent archaeological site which has been incredibly restored and brought back to life.

Caesarea was originally called Straton’s Tower after its founder Straton, who is believed to have been a ruler of Sidon in the 4th century BCE. In 96 BCE the city was captured by Alexander Yannai and remained in the Hasmonean kingdom until it became an autonomous city by Pompey. After being for some time in the possession of Cleopatra, ruler of Egypt, it was returned by Augustus to Herod Caesarea is an important site in Christian history. It was the place where Pontius Pilate governed during the time of Jesus. This was where Simon Peter converted the Roman, Cornelius, the first non-Jew to believe in Jesus. Paul was also imprisoned for two years in Caesarea. During the 3rd century, Caesarea was a centre of Christian learning. In the 4th century, the site converted to Christianity and became a major centre of the Christian Roman Empire.

13.00 We depart to visit one of Israel’s most successful Wine Estates where we have lunch and a Wine and Chocolate Tasting.

In 1882, Michael and Malka Chamiletzki first set foot upon the land of Zichron Yaacov, after emigrating from Lithuania. He was chosen by Baron Edmund de Rothschild to plant and develop vineyards in the area. The family settled in nearby Shefeya, which is today surrounded by numerous vineyards, and began to cultivate the earth.

The saying “The past is the best prophecy of the future” symbolizes the traditional-modern perception according to which the winery operates today. Although the winery is most definitely a commercial and modern enterprise, a meticulous eye is always still kept on the grapes, which are cultivated and handpicked in our vineyards. The geographic locations of our vineyards have been carefully chosen from the optimal vine-growing regions in the country – from Sde Boker in the south, to the Golan Heights in the north.

16.00 Check into our Hotel, The Dan Carmel Haifa.

Haifa has a unique and very diverse offering of bars, restaurants and culinary options. Whether you want to savour local wines and Middle Eastern fare or you’re looking to dine in style, Haifa has bars as beautiful as its beaches and cuisine as charming as its sites.

Dinner is for your own account. If you need advice or need us to make you a booking, please do ask.

Day 11

After an early breakfast we depart to The Galilee, one of the most beautiful regions of Israel. Situated in the north of the country, it is characterized by its beautiful lush landscape with agriculture, amazing natural landforms, historic sites, and quaint rural villages.

The beautiful Sea of Galilee, Israel’s largest freshwater lake, is where Jesus spent much of his ministry and performed some of his best-known miracles. You’ll visit Yardenit, a baptismal site situated on the banks of the Jordan River, at the Southern tip of the Sea of Galilee. Experience the tranquility and spiritual beauty of the waters in which Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove, and a voice came from heaven; ‘Thou art my beloved Son, with thee I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9-11

We take a drive to Tabgha and visit the Church of Multiplication, where Jesus fed five thousand people fish and bread. Not far from here you’ll visit Capernaum, home to the apostles.

You have some time to stroll and enjoy Capernaum.

Depart for Nazareth.

Nazareth, according to the Gospels was the childhood home of Jesus and where Mary lived. You’ll visit the church of St Joseph which houses the Basilica of the Annunciation, an impressive site where the angel Gabriel informed Mary she would give birth to Jesus. Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel, with a distinct Middle Eastern flavour.

Visit the charming local markets located in the winding cobbled streets of the Old City and have a bite to eat. Lunch is for your own account.

18.00 We return to the hotel to freshen up.

19.30 We Visit Akko 30 minutes north of Haifa.

You have time to explore the the Old City before dinner.

The city of Acre also known as Akko – is famous for its ancient port city. During biblical times the city was under Canaanite control. During the Roman period was a very important harbour and trade city. Acre developed into an important trade route after the Crusaders took control in the 12th and 13th centuries; The Crusaders expanded the city and enclosed it with huge walls and towers. From 1191 to 1291 Acre was the capital of the Crusader kingdom and took on international status.

In the 18th century, Acre was a major city that became famous when Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated in trying to siege Acre. His plan was to use this as a stepping stone to conquer India as a French colony. Instead the English conquered Akko and it became part of the British colony.
21.30 We enjoy our farewell Dinner at an Arabic Restaurant in the Old City where we will reminisce on our Culinary Adventure through Israel and Jordan together and make a toast to all those wonderful memories!
